Two Cuyahoga Heights Seniors Selected to Serve on Ohio Board

An interest in law and government has led to a unique opportunity for Cuyahoga Heights High School (CHHS) seniors Ava Kmetz and Arushi Shinde. They were selected to participate on the Teen Ambassador Board hosted by Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost. This prestigious opportunity introduces teens from across the state to Ohio governance and gives them leadership experience.

During their one-year term on the board, Kmetz and Shinde will attend two gatherings at the Ohio Attorney General’s Columbus office and participate in other presentations in regional offices throughout the state. They will gain an inside look at Ohio law and government focusing on a wide variety of topics, meet with Yost and other members of his department, and hear from various elected officials, all while gaining exposure to Ohio’s diverse communities. Most importantly, they will have the opportunity to actively advise the Attorney General's Office on issues relating to teens and collaborate to create solutions to improve the lives of all Ohioans

Kmetz  and Shinde traveled to Columbus in October for their first meeting. “We met with other kids and attorneys including Attorney General Yost. He actually answered one of my questions, and it was very cool to have that level of interaction,” said Kmetz. The students were given a private tour of the Ohio State Courthouse and visited the legislative courtroom where bills are passed. Finally, they were divided into small groups to work on their own topic and develop solutions on how to address it.

“Arushi and I chose the subject of human trafficking. Being able to work with not only my friend, but other like-minded people around me on these real issues affecting our world is a unique experience,” added Kmetz. Other topics student groups are addressing include vaping, cellphones in school, and legislation of marijuana.

“The Teen Ambassador Board is giving me a multitude of experiences,” said Shinde about her experiences thus far. “I am able to meet people with a work ethic, passion, and like-mindedness similar to mine – inspiring me to continue doing what I enjoy. Additionally, being part of a committee that is working on a serious problem allows me to make a difference in the local community.”
Shinde, who plans to major in political science and follow a pre-law track after graduation from CHHS, was also encouraged by the connections the experience provides. “The board will indirectly help me by allowing me to see what a governmental official does during their time in office, and to learn what I specifically want to do in politics/government. Additionally, it allows me to create connections and networks which I could use in the future.”
