First Ring Student Leadership Students Collaborate with Ohio State Leadership Research Collaborative

On November 15, students participating in the First Ring Schools Collaborative Student Leadership Institute joined the students in the Ohio State Student Leadership Research Collaborative for a joint meeting at the Fawcett Center at The Ohio State University in Columbus.

During the school year, students work as a team to investigate an issue in their school or community. As sophomores, they research the nature, causes and potential solutions to this issue.  Each team collaborates with a teacher or administrator who acts as a guide.  In the spring, they share their findings and present their recommended solutions to their superintendent and principal at a joint meeting. Students who participate for a second year either continue working to implement their recommendations or join with other schools to address a shared issue.

The workshop on November 15 allowed the students to work collaboratively and hear about some of the projects other students are working on and also to further their own research. The students also heard a presentation from The Ohio State University Athletic Director Gene Smith on strategies for becoming effective student leaders and how to use their voices.

The collaborative workshop was made possible through instructional partnerships with the Ohio State University Department of Education and Human Ecology, Cleveland State University Center for Urban Education, and the Educational Service Centers from Central and Northeast Ohio.

There is a second collaborative workshop planned for the students in the spring 2023.
