Trauma and Young Children: Teaching Strategies to Support and Empower. (Authors: Sarah Erdman & Laura Colker w/ Elizabeth Winter)
The world can be a confusing, frightening place for young children. More than ever, early childhood educators need accurate information and practical guidance for helping children and families who have experienced trauma. Following a healing-centered approach to working with children ages 3–6, this book provides an understanding of:
- What trauma is, what causes it, and its potential effects on the brain and learning
- Why your relationships with children and families are critical to promoting healing
- How to create trauma-informed programs and implement practices that support children and families
- How educators care for their own well-being
- The thread of hope woven throughout the book will encourage educators as they support children and families to find a path forward—not only to survive but also to flourish
These virtual sessions will offer opportunities to explore research on types of trauma and the effects it has on children and the teachers who support them. Book study participants will learn and discuss the impact on the brain and strategies to help students overcome and move forward to engagement and learning. Upon registration, each participant will receive instructions on accessing the Canvas course, including resources and guiding questions to consider for the weekly Zoom meetings.
These sessions will cover 2 chapters per meeting.
The first 20 participants to register for the book study will receive a free book. The book can be picked up at ESC-NEO or will be mailed to the participant.
