If your district purchased the Heggerty Curriculum to support your delivery of Tier I phonological and phonemic awareness instruction in your PK-3 grade classroom and now you’re asking yourself, what is this program all about? This professional learning session is designed for teachers, coaches, curriculum specialists and administrators who have adopted it and are new to the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum. The session will include implementation of the Heggerty Curriculum as well as Tier 2 instructional practices for phonemic awareness. In addition, participants will learn how to use the PAST assessment for identification and progress monitoring of phonemic awareness needs. Additional resources to support implementation and sustainability, such as walk-through documents for coaching implementation as well as assessment tools to sustain practices and monitor the progress of students will be provided.
At the end of this interactive and hands-on day of learning about phonological and phonemic awareness, participants will be able to:
¨ Describe how PA instruction aligns to the Simple View of Reading.
¨ Understand the importance of daily intentional sequential lessons based on 8 phonemic awareness skills (Rhyming, Onset Fluency, Blending, Identifying Final or Medial Sounds, Segmenting, Adding Phonemes, Deleting Phonemes and Substituting Phonemes).
¨ Understand the methods and reinforcement movements that go with each lesson.
¨ Administer the PAST assessment to identify specific student phonemic awareness needs.
¨ Understand how to plan and deliver targeted Tier 2 interventions in phonemic awareness based on specific student needs.
Audience: (New Implementation PD) The target audience will include teachers, coaches, curriculum specialists and administrators who have adopted and are new to the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum.
