t the May 8 meeting of the Cuyahoga Heights Board of Education, Matt Young was appointed as the next Superintendent of Cuyahoga Heights Schools. His five-year contract begins August 1, 2024. Young replaces Tom Evans who is retiring at the end of this school year.
“The Board is very pleased that Mr. Young has chosen to continue in the Cuyahoga Heights Schools as superintendent,” said Gary Suchocki, Board of Education president. “It is a privilege to have such a highly qualified and respected staff member with nearly a decade of experience in our district move into the position. We look forward to working with Mr. Young as we continue to reach new heights.”
Young, who has 29 years experience as a teacher and administrator, has been Assistant Superintendent for the Cuyahoga Heights Schools since August 2020. In this capacity, he oversaw the district’s curriculum and instruction, testing, hiring, technology, transportation, nutrition services, and buildings and grounds departments.
He was director of Curriculum and Instruction at the Summit Educational Service Center (ESC) from August 2018 to July 2020. Prior to joining the Summit ESC, he served as Cuyahoga Heights Middle/High School Principal from August 2015 to July 2018. He taught physics and chemistry at Copley High School from August 1995 to June 2012, served as Copley High School’s Assistant Principal from June 2012 to July 2013, and as Copley High School’s Principal from August 2013 to July 2015. He also coached cross country and track and field and was named Suburban League Coach of the Year 13 times.
“I am beyond humbled and grateful for the Board giving me this opportunity. It will be an honor to serve the students, staff, families and communities as superintendent. This is not something that I will take lightly, and I will work to the best of my ability everyday to meet the expectations of others,” said Young. Young acknowledged and thanked Tom Evans for the mentorship, leadership and friendship he provided. “You can’t replace Tom Evans. He always places people first, valuing the relationships above all. His positive impact has meant so much to so many and will be felt for years to come. There will never be another Tom Evans.”
Young has extensive state and district-level experience in curriculum and instruction, data and testing, human resource management, school finance, communications and public relations, and collaborative leadership. He has served as a Regional Data Leader for the Ohio Department of Education, an OTES (Ohio Teacher Evaluation System) 2.0 State Trainer, also for the Ohio Department of Education, and was a team member of the OESCA (The Ohio Educational Service Center Association) Reframing Education Project. He has been a presenter at several educational conferences and leadership workshops, and has led multiple workgroups and leadership forums related to Ohio’s response to COVID-19.
Young has a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Kent State University and a Master of Science in Education Administration degree from the University of Akron. He holds current superintendent, principal, and teaching licenses.
Young also thanked his wife, Denise, and two boys, Matthew and Nicholas, for always supporting him in all of his adventures. “They are my foundation and I am truly blessed,” Young concluded.
