Chronic absence is defined in Ohio as a student missing 10% or more of the school year for any reason – excused, medically excused, unexcused, and suspensions. Chronic absenteeism is part of Ohio’s report card as part of Ohio’s Every Student Succeeds Act Plan. Ohio and 35 other states use chronic absenteeism as a measurement of student success under the Gap Closing Component.
The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce aims to increase student achievement by improving student attendance for all students. SST3 supports districts and community schools as they work to develop systems to support the high-quality use of evidence-based attendance interventions to improve student outcomes. As a team, we can improve attendance and lower chronic absences.
