Veterans Recognized at Special Brooklyn School Celebration

The Brooklyn City Schools honors and commemorates the service of our veterans from all branches of the United States Armed Forces, and such was the case on Tuesday, November 11th, with a special assembly for students in grades K – 7. All branches of service were recognized with the United States Armed Forces Medley and veterans were each given flowers and buttons by the student members of the National Junior Honor Society and the National Junior Art Honor Society.

The 5th, 6th, 7th grade choir performed patriotic songs, including God Bless America and special remarks were given by Brooklyn High School Class of 2020 graduate and U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Alyssa Helmick, and also 3rd grade teacher Samantha Green, who is a U.S. Navy veteran.

Keli Hvizdos discussed the importance of the district’s Purple Star Recognition received by the schools and introduced the other members of their committee, including: Jennifer Hengsteler, Keli Hvizdos, Carly Kubek, Suzy Marquis, and Emily Wendling. Members of the Veteran’s Day Committee that made this assembly so impactful include: Joanne Becker, Samantha Green, Keli Hvizdos, Carly Kubek, Suzy Marquis, Laura Mills, Wendy Smith, and Emily Wendling. Special thanks to Alyssa Alberino and Jafet Rodriguez, who performed a solemn rendition of the song Taps.

The Brooklyn City Schools thanks all veterans for their service to the United States of America.
