ReadOhio Initiative – ESC of Northeast Ohio
In 2023, Governor Mike DeWine launched the ReadOhio Initiative to strengthen literacy across Ohio. House Bill 33 requires all schools to implement curriculum aligned with the Science of Reading—evidence-based research on how students learn to read.
Ohio has five ReadOhio regions, each led by a partner ESC working with the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.  The ESC of Northeast Ohio serves as one of these regional partners, employing one Regional Literacy Coaching Coordinator and 15 Literacy Coaches supporting 27 schools across 14 counties.
ReadOhio Framework
Our coaches use a Data-Driven Coaching Model centered on a student-first approach. Through collaboration and data analysis, ReadOhio Coaches help teachers strengthen instruction and accelerate literacy achievement using evidence-based practices aligned with the Science of Reading.
The ESC of Northeast Ohio provides oversight, technical assistance, professional learning, and coaching support to ensure success—building educator capacity and empowering every student to become a confident, capable reader.
