One School, One Book: EMS

At Euclid Middle School we plan to enjoy One School, One Book.  One School, One Book is the flagship program of "Read to Them", a national nonprofit based in Richmond, Virginia. The organization’s mission is to create a culture of literacy in every home and is designed to strengthen the educational connection between home, school, and the community. The book we have chosen this year is Flying Lessons & Other Stories.  We would like to invite you to join us in this shared reading experience. In addition to reading the book together as a school, we plan to have assemblies, book talks, and a virtual meet-the-author event.  We have created a partnership with the Euclid Public Library as we will invite one of the authors to speak with us as we read the book.  Some of the reasons for our participation in this activity is to:

  • Improving listening comprehension

  • Increasing vocabulary

  • Providing fluency models

  • Promoting conceptual understanding

  • Lengthening attention spans

  • Creating a positive attitude toward books and reading

  • Enjoy a shared experience

Reading aloud sharpens the imagination, creates healthy dialogue, and engenders in children a love of reading.  When children listen, they learn about their own lives and the stories of others around the globe. In addition, reading to children strengthens the emotional bonds between the adult reader and the child, providing those positive parent-child connections essential to a child’s psychological health and academic growth. In a time where we are coming back together, we can think of no greater way to do so than through a love of literature.
