Shaker Heights Students Taste-Test Pickles in Food Science Class

Middle School students in Jeremy Bishko’s Food Science class had a Pickle Tasting Day! The class was eager to taste their pickles to see if they turned out spicy, flavorful, and crunchy. Each student developed a recipe to fit their own palette, and they were thrilled to see the fruits of their labor!

Students in Mr. Bishko’s Food Science class learn about food waste and develop ways to reduce it locally, nationally and globally. A core focus of the curriculum is addressing food insecurity through practical food preservation techniques, specifically fermentation. The students engage in hands-on projects where they create salsas, pickles and hot sauces using fermentation as a method to preserve food and reduce waste.

Henkelman, a commercial vacuum packaging company, recently donated a Mini Jumbo vacuum sealer and several thousand vacuum bags to Mr. Bishko’s classes. This donation is valued at over $3,700! The students are excited to use this new equipment, which plays a critical role in controlling the fermentation environment and prolonging the shelf life of the preserved foods. Thank you, Henkelman, for your support of the Shaker Heights Schools!
