Brooklyn's "Camp Read S’More" Connects Literacy and Nature

Throughout the month of May, Brooklyn students in grades K-3 are enjoyed a variety of engaging, camping-themed activities which incorporate literacy inside the school’s Media Center. Organized by Media Specialist Wendy Smith and Media Assistant Kim Daerr, Camp Read S'More features a cozy, camp-like environment complete with several camping tents and pretend campfire. Students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in several literacy themed activities, including reading under the stars with tents, flashlights, and sleeping bags, and campfire-style read-alouds and sing-alongs while “roasting” their marshmallows placed on pretzel rods. Additional activities include creative crafts, Nature Badge challenges along with scavenger hunts and outdoor explorations tied to both reading and nature.
