Brooklyn High School Teacher Leads Professional Development Activity for Area Science Teachers
Brooklyn High School Science teacher Chris Roegiers is not only dedicated to helping his students understand key scientific concepts but also is committed to sharing new and effective classroom instruction strategies with area science teachers. Mr. Roegiers recently delivered a presentation on how to implement modeling instruction during a professional development opportunity at the ESC of Northeast Ohio on December 11, 2024. Key points of the presentation included developing activities to get students to represent scientific principles and

observations, as well as utilizing guiding questions to lead students to encapsulate and explain their thinking to help classmates strengthen their own understanding of scientific concepts. To help the participants apply the strategies, Mr. Roegiers led an activity where the teachers played the role of a student to gain a clearer understanding of how these new instructional approaches would look in an actual classroom.
A science instructor at Brooklyn High School for nineteen years and twenty-six years overall, Mr. Roegiers teaches several high school science courses, including Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, AP Chemistry, and Forensics. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry with a teaching certification from Messiah College (now University), a Master of Education in Education from Indiana Wesleyan University, and is a member of various professional organizations, including National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and American Modeling Teachers Association (AMTA). During college, Mr. Roegiers planned to pursue scientific research but after adding and taking classes in the education program, he knew that he wanted to pursue a career as a science educator. Congratulations, Mr. Roegiers on your outstanding professional accomplishment and thank you for your continuous dedication on behalf of Brooklyn
