Esports debut is a smash hit at Cleveland Metropolitan School District

There's a new game in town -- new at least to the Senate Athletic League.

Esports joined the Senate portfolio on Wednesday with an exhibition featuring teams from the Cleveland High School for Digital Arts, Ginn Academy and John Marshall playing Super Smash Bros. Students live streamed the exhibition and provided commentary.

Fourteen high schools will compete in this inaugural season, playing in rooms outfitted with technology for their teams' use.

Video gaming offers an outlet for students who might or might not get involved in other sports. Colleges and universities have jumped into the action, offering scholarships to players.

Esports is part of CMSD's pledge that students and families "Get More" by enrolling in District schools. Other new additions include expanded arts and music, afterschool programs and -- yes -- more.
