Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District Freshman Football Player Makes Her Own Path

Meghan Marshall didn’t set out to break barriers or be a role model to young girls. But that is exactly what she’s doing because Meghan Marshall is currently a defensive tackle on Heights High’s freshman football team.

“I just always wanted to play football,” she says. But her parents were hesitant for years, worried that she’d get injured. She finally got a yes from both of them this past summer and started practicing with the Heights team in June. “I just had to prove to them that I was as strong as the boys,” she says, before adding, “Or stronger.”The boys on the team were a little skeptical at first, not quite sure what to make of having a girl in their midst. “And no one wanted a girl taking their spot,” she admits. But her commitment, work ethic and physical toughness earned their respect. “It’s nice to know all these guys have my back.”

Meghan says she’s never received any negative comments from opposing team members or fans, likely because between the padding, helmet and her tall stature, she fits right in.

She recorded her first sack against Lorain during Homecoming week. “I was pretty pumped,” she says. “And the guys were definitely excited.” Being new to the sport, her teammates had taken her under their wings and offered plenty of tips and encouragement. So they all celebrated the historic accomplishment together.

She believes that her success on the team shows younger girls that they can do anything they put their mind to. “It shows them, go do it, reach for the stars.” Which is exactly what Meghan intends to do as she continues in her high school football career.
