CMSD's Natividad Pagan International Newcomers Academy focuses on literacy during the Summer Learning Experience

A primary mission of Natividad Pagan International Newcomers Academy is the development of language skills within CMSD’s most diverse multilingual student population. Perhaps that stated goal is why its students were demonstrably eager to engage in literacy infusion exercises offered during this year’s Summer Learning Experience.

Starting in late June, Natividad Pagan SLE students were given the opportunity to brainstorm with classmates and gain hands-on experience through fun and creative activities.

Students at each grade level were given a chance to explore robotics, embroidery, kick boxing, soccer, firefighting basics and even the creation of their own birdhouse, all while keeping literacy as a focal point.

Integrated learning activities were led by Dr. Terri Purcell, Associate Professor of Early Education at Cleveland State University and a CMSD consultant.  She spoke to the importance of keeping students engaged in reading during the summer months.

“The literacy initiative during both the school year and during the summer, really speaks to CMSD’s commitment to increasing the language and literacy skills of students,” said Dr. Purcell.  “Literacy goes beyond the school day; it happens each day.  All day long,” she added.

Along with engaging students in adventurous reading selections, Dr. Purcell also incorporated anti-bully initiatives into her lessons and encouraged students to share what they learned with their families.

Esperanza, Out of School Time (OST) and Summer Learning Engage provider also touted the importance of reading during the summer.  Celebrating their fortieth year of operation, the Out of School Time program oversees summer learning programming, and services nine CMSD schools.

Educators utilize the Primary Reading Engagement Program (PREP) with elementary scholars using book choice, along with contingent rewards to encourage families to participate in regular reading exercises.

Meanwhile, middle school and high school students were able to take advantage of reading materials, donated through the partnership of the ‘Book Bank’.

All donations and partnerships contribute to the continued support and momentum of CMSD scholars and their literacy efforts.
