Bedford High School Students Honoring the Fallen

Bedford High School students marked the graves of veterans buried in Bedford Cemetery with American flags to prepare for the 2023 Memorial Day Parade and Service.

Mike Garvin, a veteran, one of the Memorial Day Parade Committee members, and a 1964 BHS graduate, is only the fourth person since the Civil War to lead the effort to place the flags. There are 1,103 veterans buried in Bedford Cemetery, dating back to the Revolutionary War. The oldest veteran buried there was born in 1757. Mr. Garvin said BHS students have been helping to place flags at veterans' graves at least since the 1950s. When the students finished, Mr. Garvin and his family placed the flags on the remaining veterans' graves.
