Bedford's Cub Club is a Safe Space to Learn and Grow
You may have heard the words Cub Club circulating around Bearcat Country without knowing exactly what it is. Cub Club is an afterschool program for our Carylwood and Columbus students that illustrates BCSD's commitment to providing a safe, supportive learning environment that helps students achieve academic excellence through rich experiences.
After dismissal, the students decompress with Social Emotional Learning (SEL) strategies, because in order to learn students need to feel safe and know how to cope when learning gets tough. The students practice many different coping skills such as breathing, yoga, positive self talk, and more. After that, students take a quick break to have a snack and then it is time to get to work. They start with small group rotations where students either work on the computer doing iReady lessons, work with the teacher to complete iReady activity based interventions, or participate in hands-on, engaging reading activities that are game-based and fun.
The goal is to have a variety of ways for students to partake in learning that builds the skills they will need to grow in their reading and writing skills. Next, students move on to Young Authors time. Each student gets the opportunity to write their own book using Student Treasures Publishing company. As a team, students brainstorm the writing and editing process to write their very own book. And of course, because the students are in the 3rd grade and have all the energy in the world, brain breaks filled with movement are sprinkled throughout the process to keep our Cub Club authors focused!
Each day ends with students sharing a positive thing that happened during the day. Indeed, Cub Club is a program that provides our students with the skills that they will need to be successful inside and outside of the classroom.
