But for many parents, it can become a stressful season filled with over-scheduling, rushing from one event to the next, and trying to meet everyone’s expectations. The pressure to do it all can be overwhelming, and the fear of missing out (FOMO) can make it hard to say no to every invitation or event.

Over-scheduling can lead to exhaustion, stress, and a lack of time for the things that truly matter. Lead is especially harmful to children under six years old. It can cause lasting damage to their brains and nervous systems, leading to learning disabilities, behavior issues, and other health problems. Often, lead poisoning doesn't show obvious signs, which is why regular testing is so important.

Educators are invited to have their middle and high school students join a team of our caregivers to learn about the career journeys that landed them face-to-face with today’s most challenging healthcare issues.

Each session includes a caregiver team, whose members discuss their career path and how they contribute to providing care around a specific health topic. The sessions also provide valuable information about the depicted careers such as average income, education requirements, expected 10-year job growth and local education/certification programs. At the end of each live session, students have the opportunity to ask the caregivers any questions they may have.

In addition to the live sessions, students and teachers can go to the Connected Career Rounds on-demand website to watch recordings of prior sessions, which will be posted on Fridays after live events. Military students lead lives that are marked by frequent relocations, separation from loved ones during deployments, and the challenges of adapting to new schools and communities. For these reasons, military-connected students are considered one of the 7 vulnerable youth groups in the State of Ohio, yet most exhibit remarkable courage and adaptability. This resilience is often due to Ohio’s commitment to supporting military families and students through the Purple Star designation for schools. The special recognition is awarded to schools that demonstrate a commitment to meeting the unique needs of military-connected students by providing a welcoming and supportive atmosphere where students can thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

The changing landscape of the American workplace in recent decades has resulted in a demand for skills such collaboration, critical thinking, perseverance, and communication. Surveyed executives indicate that these types of skills, sometimes called “employability/career-readiness skills” or “social emotional learning” (SEL) skills, are equal to or more important than technical skills and yet are difficult to find in employees.  A major reason for the qualified labor shortage is that fewer students are graduating high school with the skills required for today’s workplace (casel.org). Schools must rise to meet the challenge and bridge this gap in order to prepare students to have thriving careers and fulfilling lives.

When the immediate needs are handled, the first quarter is a good time for examining and assessing the many programs and initiatives that fall under a school district or building’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). The purpose of an audit of this type is to identify potential gaps in social, emotional and behavioral services (e.g. social emotional learning, bullying prevention, trauma-sensitive practices) and to reveal strengths and needs.

It is becoming widely understood that it is best practice for school districts to establish one system of social/emotional and behavior supports. This framework is called the Interconnected Systems Framework (ISF) and it blends Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) with mental health supports. One core feature of an ISF is the expansion of PBIS leadership teams to include school and community mental health clinicians. This ensures that the interventions provided to students and families can be managed and monitored for effectiveness and it avoids staff burn-out caused by an overload of meetings and overlapping efforts.

There are multiple ESC Student Wellness Consultants that have completed the required training through Handle with Care: Ohio and have the ability to train local school districts and their corresponding first responders (police, fire, and EMS). Parma City Schools held a district-wide training session in October where Corcoran trained the high school staff while Papp trained the staff at the elementary school during Professional Development Day. There are four districts currently in different stages of the process that will aim to be completely trained by spring 2022: Parma City Schools, Richmond Heights Local Schools, Shaker Heights City Schools, and South Euclid Lyndhurst City Schools.  School districts interested in connecting with the ESC Student Wellness Department to learn more about their HWC training can reach out to Heather.Corcoran@escneo.org or cathy.papp@escneo.org.

A collective of superintendents that serve communities that border Cleveland, Ohio, the First Ring Schools Collaborative seeks to improve the education of our students so that they can experience life-long success.  We draw on our collective strength to collaborate, problem-solve and advocate for our school communities.

Recent events in America have been a devastating reminder of the obstacles that our students, particularly our African American students, face.  Acts of violence against George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor underscore the intransigent problem of race and discrimination that continue to cripple the progress and spirit of our country.

We condemn these acts and join the chorus of voices across the public and private sector that are demanding systemic change to address the brutal acts of violence against Black and Brown people in America.  Each of these acts is an assault not only on the individuals, their families and communities, they are also an assault on the soul of our country and the ideals that we seek to instill in our students.  Our hearts weep for the families of the victims.  Our hearts are heavy knowing that our students are profoundly affected by what we are all experiencing.
